2023 Gene A. Budig Lecture will explore ‘Process, Academic Writing for Special Education Majors’


Gregory A. CheathamLAWRENCE — The University of Kansas School of Education & Human Sciences welcomes Gregory A. Cheatham, associate professor in the Department of Special Education, as the 2023 Budig Teaching Professorship in Special Education award recipient and featured lecturer. 

Cheatham will present “Process, Academic Writing for Special Education Majors: Successes and Challenges” at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 19 in 150 Joseph R. Pearson Hall. Attendees have the option to attend in person or virtually via Zoom. The hybrid event is free and open to the public. In his presentation, Cheatham will discuss undergraduate and graduate writing in special education. “As the saying goes, ‘thinking is writing, and writing is thinking,’” said Cheatham. Both successes and challenges of a process-writing approach with a focus on rhetorical structure will be presented and opened up for discussion with attendees. 

Cheatham's scholarship focuses on the provision of effective, appropriate, and equitable services for young children and families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. He has a particular interest in language diversity including bilingualism for families and children considered at risk and those who have disabilities.
