Professional Program Admission

During your first year at KU, you will complete a portion of your general education requirements within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS). In addition, you'll work closely with the School of Education and Human Sciences to prepare for the application and admission process required to become fully-admitted to your professional program.

Here are the steps required:

  1. Apply online to KU as an incoming freshman (or as a transfer student), self-identified as a pre-education and human sciences major within the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences
  2. Consult with your academic advisor to discuss professional program options
  3. Apply online to the undergraduate professional program during your first (or second) year at KU, to enroll as student with the School of Education and Human Sciences

Apply online

KU students may only apply to one program at a time. Applicants are able to make changes prior to submission, though not after final submission.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the professional programs in the School of Education and Human Sciences is competitive and meeting all admission criteria does not guarantee admission. There is no cost to apply to the professional programs. General admission requirements include:

  • Applicants must complete or be enrolled in all courses required for admission. You may still apply if you have not completed or are enrolled in courses required for admission, though admission is not guaranteed.
  • Courses transferred from another institution should appear on the KU Degree Progress Report (DPR). If they do not appear on the DPR, please request transcripts to be sent directly to the School of Education and Human Sciences
  • Applicants must have a 2.75 cumulative (KU plus transfer credit) grade point average (GPA); and no grade lower than "C" in English, mathematics, or communication studies
  • Applicants must submit satisfactory recommendation surveys electronically via the application system. Applicants will provide the email address for each recommender. An automated email with a unique link will then be sent to each recommender to complete a survey. Recommendation surveys can be submitted at any time during the application window, though applicants are encouraged to begin this process as soon as they begin the application. Applicants are able to check on the status and send reminders to their recommenders, if needed (teacher education program applicants only)
  • Applicants must submit satisfactory responses to essay questions (teacher education and community health program applicants only)

Applicants should print a copy of the completed online application for their records, as well as all additional items submitted. In some cases, students are admitted without meeting all requirements completed and are still encouraged to apply.

Admission windows are open to current KU students on an annual cycle, and application windows vary by program. Once you have decided which program to apply to, check in with your academic advisor so that you don't miss your window of opportunity to apply. All application materials must be received by the deadline. No late applications will be accepted nor reviewed.

Admission decisions are made by the program faculty and are based on all submitted materials, including essays when required. You will receive your admission decision notification via email four to six weeks after the application deadline.
