TESOL & Special Education Endorsement Information

You can complete your Special Education practicum (SPED 675) in conjunction with your spring student teaching experience. You will spend approximately half of your time with both your regular education and your special education teacher. The goal is for these placements to be as inclusive, or blended, as possible.

The practicum can only be completed in the spring. Indicate on your online Student Teaching Request Form if you are pursuing a high-incidence or low-incidence special education provisional endorsement.

There is coursework that you must complete prior to the practicum. Please contact Dr. Suzanne Robinson (smrobins@ku.edu) if you are in the area of high-incidence and Dr. Jennifer Kurth (jkurth@ku.edu) if you are in the area of low-incidence to discuss your enrollment plan.

You can complete your Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) practicum (C&T 491) in conjunction with your student teaching experience. The TESOL practicum requires 45 clock hours with a TESOL-endorsed teacher, working with English language learners. This practicum can be requested:

• In the fall semester only for UEC students
• In the fall or the spring semester for Elementary students
• In the spring semester only for Middle/Secondary students & K-12 foreign language students

Indicate on your online Student Teaching Request Form if you would like to complete your TESOL practicum in conjunction with student teaching.
